File Preparation

[toggle title=”What are the necessary requirements for bleeds and safety?”]

Bleeds are required in all artwork that will be trimmed with an image extending to one of the borders. Add a quarter inch (0.25″) to each side past the cut line to allow for cutting.

Any type (text) should be 0.25″ (1/4”) inside the final page size on each side. This will guarantee your text to not be cut off form your artwork when trimmed.

[toggle title=”Does PsPrint accept any file format?”]

No. Western Web accepts print-ready files only in the .pdf format. We can not guarantee files created in MS-Word or MS-Publisher will produce high-quality images and text even as submitted as a pdf. When exporting your pdf just select the “Press Quality” option. Please contact us as 707-444-6236 if you have concerns your file might not work.

[toggle title=”Can you help me prepare my files?”]

Of course! Feel free to contact as at 707-444-6236 and we’ll be happy to walk you through the necessary steps.

[toggle title=”What if my file is missing fonts?”]

While font issues to do not arise as much as in the past, occasionally it will still happen even when submitting a pdf. The most important step to make sure this doesn’t happen is to not ignore any font warning dialogue boxes when exporting to pdf.

Print Quality

[toggle title=”What resolution should the photographs in my publication be?”]

Resolution also known as DPI (Dots Per Inch) or PPI (Pixels Per Inch) can be described as the number of dots that fit horizontally and vertically into a one-inch space. Generally, the more dots per inch, the more detail captured and the sharper the resulting image. For an image to print properly, the image resolution must be at least 200 dots per inch (DPI) at the final output size.

[toggle title=”What color mode should my publication be?”]

Color mode should be in CMYK to be a print ready file. If file(s) are submitted using any other color mode, such as RGB or Pantone, the file(s) will be converted to CMYK during preflighting. Conversion from one color standard to another may result in a colors shift or colors dropping out.

[toggle title=”What is 4-color black and why are you so concerned with it?”]While black might display perfectly well on a computer screen, occasionally a mix of cyan, magenta, yellow and black will be used to print a rich (or 4-color) black. While generally this is acceptable if the mix is used in small type or within large blocks of text, print quality will suffer due to registration issues.
